Backend Engineer · Scalable Systems · Data Pipelines

KunjRanpura.

Backend engineer. I design scalable APIs, event-driven services, and high-throughput data pipelines — systems that ingest and process large volumes, stay compliant, and don't page anyone at 3am. Currently owning EU-region delivery at Gallup.

About01 / 06

Engineer who ships. Not just buildsowns.

Five years building production APIs, event-driven services, and high-throughput data pipelines. I modernize systems that ingest and process high-volume, compliance-sensitive workloads — including re-architecting a 400K-message pipeline that ran for 10–12 hours into one that finishes in about twenty minutes.

At Gallup I own EU-region delivery end to end — bi-weekly releases, GDPR-aligned operations, event-driven ETL across Oracle and Salesforce, and a pipeline I rebuilt from scratch that now runs ~30× faster. Mostly Python, FastAPI, and AWS these days, with deep C#/.NET roots. MS Computer Science, UT Arlington. Now Berlin-based, cooking fusion meals and running taste experiments on my wife between deployments.

My family runs a jewellery business back home. It gave me an eye for craft — the kind of attention to detail that doesn't quit when a thing is “good enough.”

What I reach for.

A senior backend toolkit, built over five years of shipping in production. The tools I lean on most are set in ink.

The Journey03 / 06

Where I've been.

A route from Pune to Berlin — two degrees, four roles, and a couple of border crossings. Hover a stop for the short version; click to open the full briefing.

  • Re-architected a high-volume async workflow to scrub, transform, queue, and dispatch up to 400K messages in ~20 minutes — replacing a 10–12 hour legacy pipeline via parallelized jobs and queue-based orchestration
  • Designed event-driven integration layers and ETL pipelines syncing data across Oracle, Salesforce, and an internal platform, modernizing the platform without service disruption
  • Built data-lineage tracking for MySQL clusters and legacy pipelines using OpenMetadata and Snowflake, with Python and FastAPI powering ingestion services
  • Implemented AWS delivery-status and bounce-processing workflows (SES, SNS/SQS, EventBridge) for observability, reliability, and sender-reputation control at scale
  • Architected an internal Database Object Deployment platform automating multi-environment deployments and cutting manual release risk
  • Drove decomposition of a monolith into independently deployable, horizontally scalable microservices
  • Maintain GDPR-aligned operations with legal and compliance; mentored 3 interns and 2 junior engineers

Selected Work04 / 06

Production work, in detail.

Most of my strongest work lives inside company systems. These are public-safe accounts of the problem, the ownership, and the outcome.

Problem
A legacy pipeline took 10–12 hours to process a workflow run, tying up resources and slowing high-volume customer communication.
My role
Owned the backend redesign, implementation, operational behavior, and production release path.
Approach
Parallelized job execution and queue-based orchestration over a redesigned pipeline, with durable persistence, retries, and monitoring hooks.
Impact
Cut a 400K-message workflow from 10–12 hours to ~20 minutes while keeping the user-facing system responsive.
Beyond the Code05 / 06

The human behind the systems.

A short miscellany — what fills the hours when nothing is on fire.

01

Sport obsessive

Football, the NBA, and cricket. Being from Pune means cricket was never a choice — it was an obligation.

02

Fusion cook

Fusion meals are my side project; my wife is the QA. Acceptance criteria: no leftovers. Currently undefeated.

03

Cinema & TV

Godfather. Scarface. The Sopranos. The Wire. The Office for when I need something lighter.

04

Gamer

Battlefield and COD to decompress. Nothing clears a tough production incident like a coordinated squad wipe.

05

Jewellery roots

My family runs a jewellery business in India. It gave me an eye for craftsmanship — in gold and in code.

06

Dad-joke dept.

Why do programmers prefer dark mode? Because light attracts bugs. I have hundreds more. You’ve been warned.

Let's build
something good.

I build backend systems that ship reliably, scale under load, and stay compliant. If you're solving hard infrastructure or platform problems, I'd like to hear about it.
